Stéphane Gigandet is the founder of Open Food Facts, a non-profit organization that creates a Wikipedia for food products: a collaborative, free and open database of food products from all over the world. Using the Open Food Facts app, thousands of volunteers have scanned the barcode and taken pictures of the ingredients and nutrition facts of more than 600 000 food products to add them to the Open Food Facts database.
Food products data is used on the Open Food Facts web site and apps to compute nutrition scores such as the French Nutri-Score and processed food classification such as NOVA. The database is also freely available as open data under the Open Database Licence and it is re-used in more than 100 other apps and services. The Open Food Facts data is also used by scientists as a base for their studies.
